crayons and complex trauma~

Go for it! Get in touch with that little boy or little girl and color your face off. As a therapist I have a box of crayons in my office. Paints and felts will also do the trick. Coloring taps into the right side of our brain which connects to our emotion brain.

If you have a memory stuck in your head that you can’t get out~ Draw it! Have fun. Go nuts! Scribble, choose colors that reflect your feelings around the memory. Get mad, sad, happy, or whatever emotion comes up. Don’t stop. Let whatever needs to come up and out.  The point of the exercise is to ” discharge emotion.”  So go ahead get it up and out. Find a safe quiet place and draw the memory and then color color color. You don’t need to be an artist. Draw stick people, shapes, or use colors to represent people. Bring the picture to your therapist and explain the memory. If no emotion comes up keep returning to the memory with a drawing. You can even do it with your therapist~
